Just because thousands and thousands of pets are safely transferred from one destination to another via the airlines, it does not mean that dog owners are without responsible precautionary measures to ensure the safety of their family pet.

Veterinarians care only about the money, right? Sure they have to, but you'd be surprised at how they really feel. Money matters have a lot to do with feelings and ego. In general, vets don't want to talk about money, though if you want to work effectively with your vet, having the dollar discussion may be inevitable.

Nearly everyone, adults and kids alike, have a natural fondness for cats. They are loving, quiet, and very playful pets that can provide you with years of entertainment. Planning an Escape Route

Planning what to do in the event of a fire and the easiest way to escape is a simple thing that will save lives.

Ensure that everyone in the building is involved and is aware of the plan. For example, children, relatives (especially the elderly), lodgers and guests.

The main exits are usually the best escape routes but think about a second escape route in case the main one cannot be used. Make sure exits and escape routes are kept clear.

Keep a torch accessible to help you escape at night and ensure everyone know where keys are so doors can be unlocked quickly.

Once the plan exists, explain it to everyone in the household and practise it.

Smoke and Fire Alarms and Detectors

Smoke alarms give an early warning when there is a fire giving people more time to escape and get to safety.

Alarm systems can be fully integrated with automatic fire curtains to activate when heat and fumes set them off. Automatic fire curtains deploy when smoke and heat are detected to protect escape routes and slow down the spread of fire.

The amount & positioning of detectors and alarms is important and depends on the size and layout of the building. Even so, it is possible for a fire to break out anywhere, so generally the more alarms the better.

There should be at least one smoke alarm on every floor. For maximum protection, an detector should be in every room, especially if there any large electrical appliances - for example, televisions in bedrooms.

Smoke alarms can be purchased from most 'do it your-self' stores and at larger super markets. In the UK, smoke alarms should conform to British Standard BS 5446 Part 1, and be stamped with the well-known Kite mark.

It is important that smoke alarms and heat detectors are tested regularly (around once every week) and are in good order.

If alarms are not fitted in every room, position them between rooms on landings and hallways.

When detectors and alarms are fitted, they need to be tested to ensure they can be heard throughout the building when doors are closed, especially in the bedrooms.
