Getting someone who has a substance abuse problem into recovery can be very difficult. This is especially true when the individual feels that he or she is okay and that there is no problem except in your head. If this is the case, an intervention is often an effective measure to help the individual see how their actions are affecting those around them.

Just as different rehabilitation centers deal with different types of addictions on different levels, there are different types of interventionists that specialize in specific addictions. The role of the interventionist is to talk to the addict regarding their substance abuse, get more information as to why the problem started, and help them come to grips with the fact of their addiction.

During such an intervention, family members and friends of the addict are usually present to offer candid explanations of how the addict has hurt them or their relationship due to the abuse problem. This should be done in a loving manner without anger or accusations, so that the addict does not become defensive.

The role of the family in an intervention is to offer support. They should be prepared to listen to the problems the addict is identifying as being present, as well as share their own struggles. When the addict hears how many other people feel they have a substance abuse problem which requires rehab, they may be able to see the problem as well and recognize that they do, in fact, need help.

After the interventionist has made an assessment, he or she will outline a plan that they feel is best suited to address the particular needs of the addict to facilitate a successful recovery. It is in the best interest of the patient to begin treatment as soon as possible, so everything should be arranged before the intervention starts so that the addict can go straight into rehab.

Rarely, if ever, does an addict overcome their addiction on their own. It is important that the addict has the support of their family and friends in conjunction with professional help. It is the people closest to the addict who will interact with them on a daily basis and can identify any potential triggers or behaviors that may contribute to or be indicative of a relapse. Peer based support groups can also be invaluable when it comes to helping an individual get over substance abuse.

Make sure that you take the time to properly pair the addict with a treatment facility and program that is matched to their needs. Understand that they addict may be angered and/or resentful of an intervention or any suggestion that they may have a substance abuse problem. Do not let such possibilities stop you from getting them help - this is when they need you most.
