Nearly everyone, adults and kids alike, have a natural fondness for cats. They are loving, quiet, and very playful pets that can provide you with years of entertainment. Although most of us have a fondness for cats, that fondness can rapidly diminish when it comes to the litter box. But excessive fear of making mistakes holds back, and holding back makes boring. If you want proof, listen to politicians making speeches many are so frightened that they say nothing new or interesting and put their audience to sleep. Of course you can fix many of your mistakes. You can check your writing for errors and correct them. You can go over the hard parts of the song you are learning, slowly and carefully playing them until you have trained the mistakes out of your performance.

But there is another way to look at your mistakes. Sometimes they can bear fruit. Sometimes it is the errors you make that lead to new discoveries. These are happy accidents, and they are part of the magic of creativity. Many great ideas are discovered by accident when someone makes a mistake. Silly Putty and whole continents have been discovered by mistake. The legendary jazz trumpeter and bandleader Miles Davis had a great attitude about mistakes. "Do not fear mistakes," he said. "There are none." Easy for Miles to say he was a legendary musician. Davis said if a musician didn't make any mistakes in a performance, they "must not have been trying to do anything very interesting." That sounds about right to me. Stop worrying about being perfect and not making mistakes. Give yourself a chance to do something interesting.

Let's say you've made some time, turned off the phone, and gotten the materials together. You have everything in shape and it's time to make music, develop a new idea for work, or write, or paint a painting, and instead you find yourself making frequent trips to the refrigerator. You're beginning to wonder if you have any talent as you finish off that pint of Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey. That's okay. Just eat the donuts and get to work. Stop waiting for inspiration to arrive. Don't rush to judge what you do. The vast majority of the first efforts are almost always crappy this is true of everyone, even bona fide geniuses. All that is required of you is that you make the effort. Later on you can take the raw materials you've created and polish them into something worthwhile. Have you ever heard a musician who was playing a lead toss in a bit of melody from something familiar and often silly "Jingle Bells," or "God Save the Queen "just for the hell of it? Of course they're showing off, but being playful isn't limited to those with great musical prowess.

Even as beginner you can bring a spirit of fun to your music and your life. Improvising the Regular Way Get out your harmonicas. Put on a blues album. Try and play along. Improvising the Playful Way Slick back your hair and put on a pair of very dark sunglasses or if you'd prefer, a clown outfit or a tutu. Or put on all three! Carefully lay each of your harmonicas out on a red satin cloth. Or, if you only own one harmonica, maybe you can find some kind of holster for it. When it's time to play, stand before your arrayed harps or strap on the holster and face the iPod like it's high noon. Put on a series of completely different kinds of music, from advertising jingles to blues to Broadway musicals to AC DC hits to classical, and try playing along with everything. Don't worry if you sound good or not. When you're done, look in the mirror and say this to yourself "You kick ass." Make sure you mean it. Treat yourself to your favorite food.

By Alex Movila who plays harmonica for over 30 years.
