Franchise businesses have rules; lots of them. Do you like the idea of reading and then following a 200- page operations manual? That’s what franchises have.

What about marketing? Are you good at it? Do you like being really, really creative with it? Don’t forget that being a franchise owner means that you’ll be following specific marketing and advertising plans; you’re creativity may be stifled.

Franchise businesses have formal training for new franchise owners. You must attend this before you can open the doors to your new business. You’ll probably have to travel to franchise headquarters. Training lasts several days, sometimes up to 2 weeks.

Franchise businesses are under contract. Most franchise owners sign a 10-year franchise contract. In it, mutual expectations are explained, along with enough legalese to keep any Ivy League law student engaged in learning, for a long time. In other words, the franchise contract isn’t something that you just “sign.” It’s a bit complicated, so get some legal advice from an attorney familiar with franchise law.

Lots of franchise owners fail in their franchises because they never should have bought a franchise...any type of franchise business, at all; they weren't what I call, "franchise material." People that are right for the mostly rigid business model of franchising are not only comfortable with rules, but thrive on following them.

If you aren't sure if you're "franchise material," there's a free franchise compatibility quiz you can take. While not a scientific quiz by any means, it does provide some meaningful insights into your leanings. You can find it over at

Another way, or in combination with the quiz, is going to some of your closest friends and colleagues, and asking them what they think. Go ahead; ask them if they feel that you would make a great franchise owner? Make sure they know that a franchise really requires one to strictly follow the system, and ask them point-blank if they think that you would.

The bottom line; make sure that you're franchise material before you go out and invest your money into a franchise business. If you know ahead of time what to expect, you’ll have a much better chance of success.
